The Parliamentary Adhoc Committee investigating the fatal June 2024 plane crash that killed Malawian Vice President Saulos Chilima has appointed two South African (SA) forensic pathologists to assist in reopening the probe.
The military aircraft crash, which occurred in the Chikangawa Forest, claimed the lives of Vice President Chilima and eight other passengers and crew members.
Addressing the media, Committee Chairperson Walter Nyamilandu Manda announced that the next phase of the parliamentary inquiry will focus specifically on forensic pathology. Manda indicated that the process may require the exhumation and re-examination of selected remains, contingent upon legal approvals and full consultation with the bereaved families.
Manda stated that the decision to engage independent foreign specialists aims to reinforce the integrity of the findings, resolve lingering technical questions, and offer formal closure to the affected families.
Authorities have not yet established a firm start date for the forensic team’s work.
