Malawi is experiencing a growing fuel crisis, driven in part by unrest in neighbouring Tanzania that has disrupted key supply routes. The delays have affected the flow of petrol and diesel, putting pressure on households, businesses, and public services across the landlocked country.
Authorities are exploring alternative supply channels through Mozambique and Zimbabwe to ensure continued access to fuel, highlighting the delicate interdependence of Southern Africa’s economies.
Dennis Beru, East Africa commentator and journalist, said; “The protests in Tanzania have created a domino effect in the region. Malawi relies heavily on cross-border fuel deliveries, so any disruption has immediate consequences on daily life and economic activity.”
Government officials say they are engaging with neighbouring countries to stabilise fuel availability. Experts warn that until calm returns to Tanzania, Malawi may continue to face shortages and rising prices.
