The Malawi government has issued a safety alert to its citizens living in or travelling through South Africa (SA) following reports of attacks on foreign nationals.
In a public advisory dated May 5, 2026, the Malawi High Commission in Pretoria and the Malawi Consulate General in Johannesburg said they had received reports of violence in some areas.
Malawian nationals have been urged to remain vigilant, carry valid identification documents such as passports or permits at all times, avoid crowded places and demonstrations, and limit unnecessary movement, particularly in high-risk areas.
The advisory comes as several African countries issue similar warnings to their citizens amid a resurgence of anti-immigrant protests, vigilantism and xenophobic violence in parts of SA.
