Malawian police are investigating the disappearance of four police dogs from the presidential palace during the political transition in September.
Godfrey Arthur Jalale, a former Deputy Chief of Staff, has been arrested in connection with the case, though he denies any involvement. The alleged theft took place shortly after Jalale’s political ally lost the election to President Peter Mutharika.
At the same time, former President Lazarus Chakwera is facing allegations of mismanagement of public resources. Police have clarified that Chakwera has not been arrested but have obtained a search warrant for his residence, as authorities suspect the stolen dogs may be there.
Chakwera’s party has criticised the investigation, saying it is politically motivated and intended to harass the former President.
