President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has held talks with a high-level delegation from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as Malawi continues to grapple with significant economic headwinds.

The meeting, which took place on Sunday evening at Mtunthama State Lodge in Lilongwe, was led by Abebe Selassie, the IMF Director for Africa.

The engagement gave Selassie and his team an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of Mutharika’s economic vision, particularly how his administration intends to confront rising inflation, persistent foreign exchange shortages, and mounting fiscal pressures. Malawi has been facing a difficult economic environment marked by weak growth, high living costs and constrained government revenues.

Mutharika emphasised that his government is prioritising stabilisation measures aimed at restoring confidence, supporting vulnerable households and reviving productive sectors such as agriculture, energy and manufacturing. He is said to have underscored the importance of rebuilding macroeconomic stability as the foundation for long-term development.
