Human rights organisations in Malawi have criticised what they describe as the misuse of social media

Human rights organisations in Malawi have criticised what they describe as the misuse of social media, following corruption allegations made by a local lawyer against senior officials.

The groups, MABLEM and the Human Rights Consultative Committee, say online platforms are increasingly being used in ways that risk undermining accountability and public trust.

The concerns come after lawyer Alexious Kamangila publicly accused some high-ranking figures of engaging in corrupt practices.

The organisations have urged responsible use of digital platforms, warning that while social media plays a critical role in raising awareness, it should not be used to spread unverified claims or inflame tensions.
