Divisions are widening within Malawi’s governing Democratic Progressive Party

Divisions are widening within Malawi’s governing Democratic Progressive Party, with a growing power struggle at the top of government raising fresh questions about leadership succession.

Sources close to the party say President Arthur Peter Mutharika has called on Vice-President Jane Ansah to step down, a move insiders describe as part of a broader push to shape who takes over in future.

The tension comes after controversy surrounding the Ansah’s trip to the United Kingdom in December 2025. Initial reports suggested the visit was funded with public money, before later claims pointed to private financing.

But those within the party say the disagreement goes well beyond the travel issue, pointing instead to deeper political positioning behind the scenes.

Malawian rights activist Oliver Nakoma says the situation reflects growing cracks within the ruling party, warning that the outcome could have a significant impact on the country’s political direction.
