Thousands of academically gifted but financially struggling Malawian students risk being priced out of public universities following a drastic 100 percent tuition fee hike.

The Civil Society Education Coalition (CSEC) has raised the alarm, warning that the sudden doubling of fees could deepen educational inequality across the country, effectively turning higher education into an exclusive privilege for the wealthy.

The timing of the increase hits families at an incredibly difficult moment, as many are already battling an escalating cost of living, soaring food prices, and shrinking household incomes.

Education advocates point out that without urgent intervention or increased financial aid support, the steep price increase will force bright, qualified students from low-income backgrounds to abandon their tertiary education dreams entirely.
