Hundreds of Malawians are camped outside the Malawi Consulate General in SA
Hundreds of Malawian nationals are camped outside the Malawi Consulate General in South Africa’s (SA) Woodmead, Sandton, Gauteng Province, seeking urgent assistance to return home.
They say they fled their communities following job losses, threats of eviction, and growing fears of violence ahead of an anti-illegal immigration June 30 deadline.
More than 400 Malawian nationals, including dozens of children and pregnant women, remain stranded outside the Malawi Consulate General in Woodmead, Sandton Johannesburg.
Forced to sleep on the pavement in freezing conditions with only blankets and their luggage, they say they are relying on humanitarian organisations and the Malawi Diaspora Programme for food and other basic necessities.
The consulate closed and no repatriation process yet underway, many are growing increasingly desperate.
