Former Malawian President and Malawi Congress Party leader Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera has appealed to President Arthur Peter Mutharika for a political truce, urging calm and dialogue following the recent arrests of opposition figures.
The appeal was made during a telephone conversation initiated by Chakwera, in which he raised concerns over the detention of several senior officials linked to the previous administration. He warned that the arrests risk inflaming political tensions and undermining stability.
Mutharika has dismissed claims that the arrests are politically motivated, insisting they form part of efforts to restore accountability and strengthen the rule of law. He said the era of politically driven arrests is over, noting that under the previous government a number of high-profile cases failed to result in convictions.
Mutharika reaffirmed his commitment to tackling corruption, a central pledge he made when he returned to office last year.
