Mali is marking 66 years of independence, commemorating its break from French colonial rule on September 22, 1960.
The country gained independence after French Sudan became the Republic of Mali, following the dissolution of the short-lived Mali Federation with Senegal.
More than six decades later, Independence Day comes as Mali seeks to assert greater national sovereignty and reshape its international partnerships.
The country has taken steps to reduce its reliance on traditional Western partners while strengthening ties with other countries, as it continues to navigate significant political, economic and security challenges.
Mali also remains confronted by a serious threat from armed groups operating in parts of the country and across the wider Sahel region.
