Amnesty demands answers over disappeared Malian politician Mountaga Tall

For six months, the family of veteran Malian lawyer and pro-democracy politician Mountaga Tall has lived in agonizing limbo, desperately searching for answers that the state refuses to provide.

Mountaga Tall, a 69-year-old stalwart of Mali’s 1990s democratic transition, was snatched from his home in Bamako on the night of May 3, 2026, by armed, hooded men driving unmarked vehicles. Weeks later, on May 16, his eldest son, Cheick Mamadou Tall, vanished after leaving home to deliver personal belongings to his father. Neither man has been seen or heard from since, and neither has been formally charged with a crime.

Human rights organisations are drawing a sharp line in the sand. Amnesty International has renewed its urgent demands for Mali’s military-led government to break its silence, disclose their whereabouts, and prove they are alive.

“The Malian authorities cannot continue to evade their responsibility to independently, impartially and transparently investigate the disappearances of Mountaga and Cheick Mamadou Tall. Six months of uncertainty and anguish for their family must end,” said Marceau Sivieude, Amnesty International’s Regional Director for West and Central Africa.

The case has sent a chilling tremor through civil society. While other political figures abducted during a wave of arrests earlier this year have finally surfaced in detention facing state security charges, the Talls remain swallowed by the void, a grim reminder of the rising tide of enforced disappearances casting a dark shadow over the Sahel.
