Security forces in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) are carrying out search operations in Kasai province following an overnight mass jailbreak that left Luebo Prison empty.
At least 50 inmates escaped from the facility between Thursday and Friday in what authorities suspect was a co-ordinated operation. Luebo territorial administrator Jean Tshiawuke warned that several of the fugitives pose a significant threat to public safety, urging local residents to remain on high alert.
Speaking to Africa Update host, DRC correspondent Jimmy Shukrani Bakuma reported that local civil society groups and territorial authorities suspect prison guards and local personnel may have aided the escape. Reports from the region also highlight severe overcrowding and inadequate living conditions as key factors driving the inmate breakout.
While no prison wardens or officials have been formally suspended or arrested, investigative teams have launched inquiries to determine accountability. Security forces have deployed siege and search operations across Luebo territory to locate and recapture the escaped convicts, though no fugitives have yet been apprehended.
