The March and March Movement has taken its protest action to the streets of South Africa’s (SA) Johannesburg, Gauteng Province, as part of what it describes as a widening national campaign against undocumented immigration.
This follows a demonstration at the Union Buildings in Pretoria, Gauteng Province, earlier this week, where supporters gathered to hand over a memorandum calling on government to strengthen border management and more rigorously enforce immigration laws.
The movement alleges that undocumented foreign nationals are increasingly dominating township economies, alleging that some are operating businesses using fraudulent documentationn.
Organisers maintain that the current action is peaceful and say they are expected to deliver their memorandum of demands to the Johannesburg Legislature later this afternoon.March and March Movement Pastor ST Dlamini: “Anyone who enters the country without proper documentation, then that person is a thief. So we know that most of these foreigners enter our country illegally. We want to say to them, let them go to their country and fight their government. Our forefathers died fighting apartheid with bare hands and they won. These people are all gathering in SA, imagine Africa has 52 countries, all these 51 countries are coming here, what space? They can’t be all here at ones, they must also go to their countries and make their country great.”
