Mauritius regulators set new stablecoin standards to drive digital financial growth

Mauritius is expanding its digital asset sector after adopting a dedicated regulatory framework for stablecoins, a move designed to strengthen its position as one of Africa’s leading financial technology hubs.

While the new legislation provides clear guidelines for issuing digital assets, it also places tighter compliance, anti-money-laundering, and risk management expectations on fintech operators across the region. Industry experts note that as regulatory oversight increases across African markets, businesses must balance swift innovation with strict digital identity and security standards.

Speaking on the shift, Nairah Dinah, Deputy Head of Business Development at compliance firm Sumsub, highlighted that while clear regulations boost investor confidence, African tech firms will need to adapt quickly to stricter verification processes to remain competitive and compliant on the international stage.
