Former South African (SA) President Kgalema Motlanthe says the complex challenge of migration carries significant implications for the entire African continent, requiring co-ordinated regional action rather than isolated national policies.

Speaking at the annual Kgalema Motlanthe Foundation Winter Seminar in Sandton, Johannesburg, Motlanthe pointed out that cross-border movement is a shared global and regional reality. Held under the theme “Continent and Migration”, the seminar brings together international delegates, policymakers, and experts to help chart long-term solutions.

Motlanthe highlighted that tackling migration effectively requires learning from diverse international and regional experiences, warning that SA cannot resolve the issue in isolation.

“The issue of migration is not unique to SA. That is why we thought it was best to convene this seminar. There is the Advisor to the Minister of Finance from Ghana, and there will be a European Union Ambassador, so they also bring into our conversation the different experiences as well as perspectives. Because SA can’t be an island on its own,” said Motlanthe.
