Mining production rises 2.5% year-on-year in March: Stats SA

On a month-to-month basis seasonally adjusted mining production slipped by 5.1% in March reversing gains in the previous month.

Data released by Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) shows mining production has increased by 2.5% year-on-year in March. While the rise in output was still positive, it is slower than the 9.7 % jump recorded in February.

“The latest mining figures conclude the results for the first quarter of the year. Mining production increased by 0,6% in the first quarter of 2026 compared with the fourth quarter of 2025. Platinum Group Metals was the largest positive contributor, growing by 8,5% and contributing 2,3 percentage points to overall growth. The mining industry also produced more diamonds, gold and chromium ore in the first quarter,” says principal survey Statistician at Stats SA Juan-Pierre Terblanche.
