Jean-Claude Ngoy, the head of one of the Democratic Republic of Congo’s (DRC) civil society organisations, says more than 2 500 households without shelter after two rivers burst their banks and flooded several villages in the country’s central-eastern region
Ngoy says recent rains have continued to destroy much of the infrastructure in the Maniema province, leading to the overflow of the Congo and Ulindi Rivers and the displacement of hundreds of residents in the villages of Kasera, Tubila and Ulindi.
“At least 2 533 households were affected after their homes were submerged by the waters. We are appealing to the provincial and national authorities as well as to humanitarian actors for support,” Ngoy said.
The organization says schools, health facilities and drinking water sources have not been spared by the floods, as assessment teams continue to warn that residents could face acute hunger with local food plantations and fish ponds submerged.
