Morocco made a solid start to their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign, beating Comoros 2–0 in their Group A opener at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat on Sunday night.
Playing in front of a home crowd, the tournament hosts showed patience before striking twice after the break to secure all three points and move to the top of the group. The result puts the Atlas Lions in a strong position as they look to seal early qualification for the knockout stages.
Head coach Walid Regragui will be hoping for a similar performance when Morocco return to the same venue to face Mali on December 26.
For Comoros, the defeat was a disappointing start to their tournament. The Coelacanths competed well early on but were undone by two second-half goals. Coach Stefano Cusin is expected to push for a quick turnaround when his side meets Zambia at the Mohamed V Stadium on December 26, a match that could prove crucial to their hopes of progressing.
