Mozambique’s President Daniel Chapo has called for a sweeping national mobilisation to end gender-based violence (GBV), warning that the country cannot meet its goal of zero cases without bringing men directly into the fight.

Speaking at the opening of the 8th National Conference on Women and Gender in Maputo, Chapo pointed to gender-based violence as one of the most stubborn social challenges holding the nation back.

The two-day conference brings together government bodies, civil society groups, and international partners to tackle the systemic barriers facing women and girls across Mozambique.

Speaking on the changes needed on the ground, Dr Alice Banze, President of the African Women’s Academy and Executive Director of the Gender and Sustainable Development Association, stressed that policy promises must now translate into concrete protections for vulnerable communities.
