Mozambique has recorded one of the largest drug seizures in its history

Mozambique has recorded one of the largest drug seizures in its history following the discovery of 3.7 tons of fentanyl at a private facility within Maputo International Airport. The illicit cargo, which was initially declared on shipping documents as harmless vitamins, was intercepted and identified by authorities as a highly dangerous synthetic opioid associated with extreme risks of severe addiction and fatal overdose.

According to the National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC), the massive shipment points to the operation of a sophisticated international drug trafficking syndicate. Investigators suspect the network maintains deep logistical links across multiple continents, attempting to exploit Mozambican territory and its transport infrastructure as a strategic transit hub for global distribution.

The unprecedented scale of the haul has raised immediate alarms among security and legal analysts regarding the shifting dynamics of organised crime in Southern Africa.
