Mozambique opposition party calls for investigation into cadre violence

Mozambique’s primary opposition movement, Optimistic Party for the Development of Mozambique (PODEMOS), led by presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane, has raised grave security concerns following the reported killings of 57 of its members since August 2026.

According to a detailed report by Correspondent Bright Sonjela, the opposition leadership has strongly condemned the targeted violence directed at its cadres across the country amidst ongoing political tensions following recent electoral processes.

Speaking on behalf of the party, Mondlane called for immediate and independent investigations into the circumstances surrounding the fatalities, urging law enforcement agencies and state authorities to guarantee the safety and protection of all political actors.

The opposition has voiced growing concerns over the deteriorating security environment for political dissidents, calling on civil society organizations and regional bodies to monitor the human rights situation in Mozambique.
