Ossufo Momade ends bid for Renamo Presidency in Mozambique

Ossufo Momade, the leader of Mozambique’s main opposition party, Renamo, has announced that he will not stand for re-election at the party’s next congress, signaling a major transition for the country’s political landscape.

Speaking in Maputo during commemorations marking the 34th anniversary of the 1992 General Peace Agreement, Momade confirmed his intention to step aside to allow new leadership to emerge within the Mozambican National Resistance.

Momade took the helm of Renamo in 2018 following the death of long-time leader Afonso Dhlakama. However, his tenure has faced mounting criticism from internal factions over party strategy and electoral performance.

Attention now shifts to Renamo’s National Council meeting, scheduled for October 21 and 22, where senior officials will determine whether to convene an extraordinary congress to select his successor ahead of the regular congress scheduled for 2028.

Mozambican political analyst Dr Fredson Guilenge noted that Momade’s decision marks a pivotal turning point for Renamo as the party seeks to internalise democratic reforms and reposition itself as a competitive opposition force.
