Mozambique has announced a suspension on the importation of a range of consumer goods

Mozambique has announced a suspension on the importation of a range of consumer goods as part of a broader strategy to support domestic industries and conserve foreign currency.

The restrictions apply to products such as cement, flour, rice, spaghetti, bottled water, and tiles, which the government says can be sufficiently produced within the country. Authorities believe the move will encourage consumers and businesses to prioritise locally manufactured goods, while easing pressure on Mozambique’s foreign exchange reserves.

Officials argue that the measure will also help stimulate local production, protect jobs, and strengthen small and medium-sized enterprises operating in the manufacturing sector. However, some traders have expressed concern about the potential impact on prices and supply in the short term.

The government says it will continue to monitor the situation to ensure that local producers are able to meet demand and that the policy does not lead to shortages.
