Mozambique President Chapo warns of forcible weapon seizures after December amnesty

Mozambican President Daniel Chapo has warned that security forces will forcefully seize unregistered weapons once the government’s police amnesty deadline passes in December.

Speaking as part of a national push to disarm illicit networks, Chapo urged anyone holding illegal firearms to surrender them voluntarily while the amnesty window remains open. He noted that removing illegal guns from circulation is critical as Mozambique works to curb rising rates of organized crime, kidnappings, human trafficking, and drug smuggling.

He also called on police and security personnel to maintain strict professionalism and uphold the law to rebuild public trust and ensure the crackdown remains fair and effective.
