Mozambique, Tanzania and Malawi have finalised the establishment of the joint Ruvuma River Basin institution to oversee the sustainable management and shared use of transboundary rivers and lakes across the three nations.

The new multilateral body is tasked with regulating water resource allocation, strengthening environmental protection, and facilitating joint infrastructure and agricultural projects along shared watercourses, including the Ruvuma River basin.

Officials from the three neighbouring countries highlighted that the framework will enhance regional integration, mitigate climate change impacts, and prevent potential water-use disputes by promoting equitable governance of shared aquatic ecosystems.
