Mozambique’s President Daniel Chapo has begun his first official visit to Ethiopia

Mozambique’s President Daniel Chapo has begun his first official visit to Ethiopia, signalling a push to deepen diplomatic and economic ties across the continent.

The two-day trip, at the invitation of Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, comes as Maputo looks to strengthen its presence in Africa and build new partnerships.

Political analyst Gustavo Mavie says the visit reflects a broader shift in Mozambique’s foreign policy priorities.

“This is about positioning Mozambique more firmly within the African space, not just politically, but economically as well,” he said.

Talks are expected to focus on co-operation in trade, investment and regional integration, areas both countries have been seeking to expand.

For Mozambique, the visit also offers an opportunity to engage one of Africa’s key diplomatic players, as Ethiopia hosts the headquarters of the African Union and plays a central role in continental affairs.

Mavie believes the trip could open the door to new opportunities if followed by concrete agreements.

“The challenge now is to translate these high-level engagements into tangible outcomes that benefit both countries,” he added.
