South Africa’s (SA) Women’s Sevens player Zintle Mpupha says the women’s game has improved a lot over the years, thanks to better structures and more support from South African Rugby Union.
Mpupha says things have changed since she first joined the system in 2013, with more opportunities now available for female players.
She recently played alongside Eloise Webb for the Isuzu Bulls Daisies and Sanlam Boland Dames in the Pick n Pay Women’s Super League final in Pretoria. Both players have now been called up again to the national Sevens squad for the HSBC SVNS World Championship in Hong Kong next weekend.
Mpupha says stronger systems are helping players focus more on playing rugby instead of worrying about basic challenges.
“The system is in a good place,” she said. “We have produced a lot of what we were meant to produce. Now the pressure is off, and we can just enjoy our rugby.”
She added that improved competitions and clearer development pathways are starting to make a real difference in the women’s game.
