Namibia’s Executive Director and Accounting Officer for Sport, Gerald Vries, says the government is awaiting a technical review from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) before finalising preparations for the construction and upgrading of the Independence Stadium.
Namibia currently has no stadium approved by CAF or the FIFA, resulting in national teams being barred from hosting international fixtures. As a consequence, Namibia has been forced to stage its home matches outside the country.
At the start of the current financial year, the sports ministry received an allocation of $25 for the project. However, during the October 2025 Mid-Term Budget Review, the capital budget was reduced by $12 million, leaving a revised allocation of $13 million.
Vries confirmed that $2 million of the revised budget has already been spent on consultancy fees linked to the upgrading of the Independence Stadium. The remaining funds are expected to be utilised between January and March 2026.
