Namibia is marking 36 years of independence today, celebrating more than three decades since gaining sovereignty in 1990.
President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has expanded this year’s celebrations across all 14 regions, under the theme “Beyond 35: For a Prosperous Future”. The move aims to bring commemoration closer to communities across the country.
She officially launched the celebrations with a midnight address from State House, marking the exact moment Namibia gained independence on March 21, 1990.
This year’s anniversary comes at a time of transition for the country, following the passing of former President Hage Geingob in 2025.
