SWAPO is heading towards a crucial elective congress in 2027

Namibia’s ruling South West Africa People’s Organisation (SWAPO) is heading towards a crucial elective congress in 2027, with internal factions already positioning themselves for the party’s influential Vice-President role.

The Vice-President position is regarded as one of the most powerful posts within SWAPO because the holder is constitutionally viewed as the automatic successor to the party Presidency.

SWAPO has governed Namibia since the country gained independence from South Africa in 1990, but analysts say its political dominance has gradually weakened in recent years.

Among the leading figures being mentioned for the vacant Vice-President position is Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila, who is widely seen as a strong contender ahead of the congress.

Kuugongelwa-Amadhila previously finished second to current Namibian President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah in earlier internal party elections and is believed to retain significant support among delegates seeking a shift in the party’s internal balance of power.
