Civil society, researchers, advocacy groups and government representatives have called for a united effort to end stigma and discrimination against people living with HIV and AIDS

Civil society, researchers, advocacy groups and government representatives have called for a united effort to end stigma and discrimination against people living with HIV and AIDS. The call came at the launch of the HIV Stigma Index 2.0 Report in Pretoria, South Africa (SA), this Tuesday.

Compiled by the National Association of People Living with HIV and AIDS, the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) and the National AIDS Council, the study captures the experiences of more than 5 000 participants nationwide. Researchers say the findings represent a significant step towards ending HIV as a public health threat.

The report reveals that stigma remains a major barrier to HIV testing, treatment and prevention, despite progress in reducing new infections. HSRC Senior Researcher, Dr Mpumi Zungu, said; “Our research has highlighted how stigma undermines access to testing, treatment and psychosocial support, ultimately affecting health outcomes and the well-being of people living with HIV. The Index 2.0 builds on this legacy, using updated tools and methodologies to reflect current realities and emerging challenges.”

Stakeholders at the launch pointed out the need for action across sectors to tackle discrimination, strengthen access to care, and support the rights of those affected by HIV and AIDS.
