The Regional Feminist Leadership Development (RFLD) network has released Volume One of the African Women’s Human Rights Report 2026, offering a comprehensive assessment of the legal, social, and economic conditions facing women across the African continent. The publication highlights key advancements in gender equity while drawing critical attention to ongoing structural violence, systemic discrimination, and institutional barriers that continue to impede the full realisation of women’s rights in various African nations.
A central focus of the document is the persistent gap between legislative commitments and their actual enforcement on the ground. Although numerous member states of the African Union have ratified international and regional treaties aimed at protecting women, including the Maputo Protocol, domestic implementation remains inconsistent. The report details how deep-seated cultural norms, inadequate judicial resources, and a lack of political will frequently prevent statutory protections from delivering tangible safety and justice for women and girls.
The report further examines the ongoing impact of gender-based violence, economic exclusion, and restricted access to health infrastructure across the continent. It notes that women in rural and conflict-affected regions remain particularly vulnerable to economic marginalisation and limited access to essential services, including sexual and reproductive healthcare. Financial constraints and inadequate legal aid infrastructure also present severe obstacles to women seeking legal recourse against rights violations.
Addressing these findings, the organisation urges African governments, civil society bodies, and regional institutions to move beyond policy formulation and commit to direct, measurable enforcement mechanisms. The publication stresses that achieving sustainable social and economic development in Africa depends directly on eliminating gender-based barriers, strengthening legal accountability, and guaranteeing equal protections for all women across the continent.
