New South African Revenue Service (SARS) Commissioner, Doctor Ngobani Johnstone Makhubu, says he plans to accelerate much of the work initiated by his predecessor, Edward Kieswetter.
This includes looking at ways to expand the tax base, zoning in on the illicit economy and continuing the work to extra tax debt owed to SARS.
Makhubu says engaging with industry, particularly tax practitioners, will be a key aim for him as they serve a critical role in bridging between taxpayers and SARS.
He was speaking to SABC News on the sidelines of the opening of a new SARS service centre in Newtown, Johannesburg.
“We want to zone in on issues of ethical conduct within that tax administration as well, just to make sure that we are all beyond reproach in terms of our conduct, because if our conduct is beyond reproach, it gives confidence to the taxpayer.”
