A new doctoral study has uncovered the sophisticated tactics used by vehicle theft and hijacking syndicates in Durban, South Africa (SA).
The research by University of KwaZulu-Natal criminologist Dr. Lennox Luzipo reveals how criminals use advanced technology, intimidation and profiling to target victims. Luzipo says the most alarming finding in his research is the alleged involvement of corrupt law enforcement officers.
The methods which offenders use are technological. Gadgets are different which are used for robbing people. They use jammers and enter your car within minutes. The use of drones is to provide intelligence for them, like a surveillance to survey the area itself. The officers are informants, they feed offenders with top secret information about investigations and upcoming raids.”
