Niger’s President has carried out a major overhaul of the country’s military leadership following a mutiny in Niamey, moving to consolidate the nation’s security architecture.
Under the new appointments, General Maman Sani Kiau has been named Chief of Defence Staff of the Armed Forces, while General Abdourahmane Abou Zataka has been appointed Chief of Staff of the Army.
The restructuring follows a mutiny attempt in late August, when Nigerian security forces put down an uprising after heavy fighting broke out across several critical sectors in the capital, including the presidential palace, Niamey International Airport, and an adjoining military base.
