Niger has revoked the licences of dozens of transport operators and drivers after they refused to deliver fuel

Niger has revoked the licences of dozens of transport operators and drivers after they refused to deliver fuel to neighbouring Mali, citing fears of attacks by jihadist groups.

The move comes following a fuel blockade imposed on Mali in September by an al-Qaeda affiliate, which has also targeted petrol tankers on major highways. Mali, a landlocked country, relies heavily on fuel imports to supply its northern desert regions, where various militant groups are active.

In July, Mali signed a deal with Niger to import 85 million litres of fuel over six months to support its northern territories. Niger, an oil-producing country and key ally of Mali, said it was taking action to ensure the delivery of fuel despite the security risks.

Both countries are run by military juntas and continue to face threats from jihadist violence.
