Nigeria targets record-breaking medal run in Glasgow

The Chief Executive Officer of the Elite Athletes Development and Podium Board, Yusuf Ali, has expressed strong confidence that Team Nigeria is on track to deliver one of its most dominant performances yet at the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

The former Nigerian long jumper believes the country’s athletes are well-positioned to surpass their previous medal counts at the upcoming games, which will be held in Glasgow, Scotland, from July 23 to August 2. However, Ali revealed that preparations have hit a snag due to strict United States visa restrictions under President Donald Trump, which are currently affecting elite Nigerian athletes training in America.

Despite these administrative challenges, Ali confirmed that the team’s training logistics, uniforms, and equipment are fully secured. He added that the contingent is now waiting for an official send-off meeting with the President before departing for Scotland, with the country’s weightlifting and Paralympic squads expected to lead the charge for podium finishes.
