The Nigerian High Commission in South Africa (SA) says high-level engagements are underway following unrest linked to the coronation of an Igbo king in KuGompo in the Eastern Cape province.
Authorities were responding to a picket outside the Commission in Pretoria, after violent protests broke out in KuGompo earlier this week. Demonstrators torched vehicles, looted shops, and called for the removal of the leader, arguing the ceremony undermines SA’s sovereignty.
A representative of the acting High Commissioner, Olajide Ogunmajedi, said Nigeria does not support the installation and has formally distanced itself from the event. He added that authorities have written to local leaders in the Eastern Cape and are engaging with stakeholders.
The Commission has also urged Nigerians living in SA to respect local laws and customs.
