Nigerian opposition leader Atiku Abubakar has launched a sharp critique against President Bola Tinubu’s administration, questioning a controversial line item in the country’s national budget.
Abubakar, the African Democratic Congress presidential candidate and former Vice President of Nigeria, revealed that the government allocated 4 million Dollars for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. He noted the absurdity of the funding, pointing out that Nigeria’s national team had already been eliminated from the competition and failed to qualify. Abubakar questioned how a responsible government could justify dedicating millions in state funds to a tournament the country is completely excluded from.
The funding dispute emerges alongside broader political tensions. Abubakar further alleged that the Nigerian presidency is actively attempting to control the fallout from the Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council (PFIPC) scandal. According to him, the administration is manipulating the narrative around the fake agency scheme to protect implicated government officials while trying to redirect the public blame onto opposition figures.
