A youthful Nigeria national athletics team has secured two additional qualification spots for the 2027 World Athletics Championships in Beijing after strong performances at the World Relays in Gaborone, Botswana.
The team booked their places in the women’s 4x100m and mixed 4x400m relays on the final day of competition at the National Stadium on Sunday.
Competing largely with home-based athletes, Team Nigeria delivered one of its most impressive outings on the international stage in recent years, signalling growing depth in the country’s athletics pipeline.
Their performance has reignited debate around the importance of investing in grassroots development and strengthening domestic competitions to sustain success.
There is still more at stake for Nigeria, with the men’s and women’s 4x400m teams, as well as the men’s 4x100m squad, still in contention for qualification when the next window opens later this year.
