Nigeria’s medical authorities have provisionally suspended the Director of a private hospital and two other doctors following the death of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s 21-month-old son.
The child, Nkanu Adichie-Esege, one of twins, died on January 7 after complications arose during preparatory medical procedures at Euracare Hospital in Lagos.
The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) said its investigation panel established a prima facie case of medical negligence against Euracare Hospital and Atlantis Hospital in relation to the child’s treatment.
Following the investigation, the council provisionally suspended the three doctors involved, including the director of the private hospital, from practising medicine pending the outcome of disciplinary tribunal proceedings.
The MDCN said the move was part of its regulatory responsibility to maintain professional standards within Nigeria’s healthcare system, while investigations into the circumstances surrounding the child’s death continue.
