The World Health Organisation (WHO) has confirmed that there have been no cases of harm linked to the use of sanitary pads globally.
This was announced during a joint media briefing following a research study on sanitary pads, published by the Department of Chemistry at the University of the Free State last month.
The study showed that endocrine-disrupting chemicals found in some sanitary products could pose long-term health risks for women.
Meanwhile. South Africa’s Health Minister Doctor Aaron Motsoaledi says studies have proven that the minimal levels of endocrine-disrupting chemicals found in sanitary pads and panty liners do not cause clinical harm.
Motsoaledi says that no health risks have been detected.
“Twenty publications have been produced over the years about endocrine-disrupting chemicals in sanitary pads. We had 20 publications already. All twenty studies have not demonstrated any inference of clinical harm to the people using these products. And again, they want us to repeat that endocrine-disrupting chemicals are found all over where human beings are.”
