Orlando Pirates’ Ndah pays tribute to retiring Super Eagles captain

Orlando Pirates defender Olisah Ndah has paid tribute to Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong following the Nigerian defender’s retirement from international football last week.

Troost-Ekong ended his international career after 83 caps, stepping away just days before this month’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), despite being named in the preliminary squad.

Ndah described his national teammate as a remarkable leader and an exemplary figure on and off the pitch. “He is a great person. From the very first day I got called up and met him, I could see he is fantastic. Apart from being the captain, he is a true leader who does so much for us,” Ndah said.

He lamented what he sees as a lack of recognition for Troost-Ekong’s contributions. “Obviously, in football not everyone is going to like you, but you can see from what he did for us, highest goal scorer in the last AFCON, player of the tournament, it says a lot. Yet as human beings, we are quick to forget,” Ndah added.

Troost-Ekong’s retirement marks the end of a distinguished international career that saw him play a key role in Nigeria’s defence and leadership on the continental stage.
