More than 300 undocumented migrants have been deported at the Maseru and Ficksburg border posts

More than 300 undocumented migrants have been deported at the Maseru and Ficksburg border posts connecting South Africa (SA) and Lesotho, as authorities step up operations along the busy crossings.

The Border Management Authority (BMA) reports that at least 100 people have been arrested while attempting to re-enter SA illegally. Provincial Manager Dr Thabo Nkhoma said some of those apprehended were found carrying illicit goods.

The deportations come amid heightened border controls during the peak festive travel period. Since the return phase began on January 1, the Maseru Bridge has recorded over 41 000 travellers moving in both directions between Lesotho and SA. Ficksburg Border Post has processed just over 42 000 travellers in the same period.

Authorities say monitoring will continue to prevent illegal entry while ensuring legitimate travellers can cross safely.
