The death toll now stands at 14.
More than 60 scholar transport vehicles have been impounded in an operation that South African (SA) Transport Minister Barbara Creecy is leading in Lenasia, south of Johannesburg, Gauteng province.
Two drivers have also been arrested for overloading. The operation follows a crash involving a scholar transport vehicle in Vanderbijlpark on Monday.
The death toll now stands at 14.
Scholar transport drivers are calling on government to fast-track the process of obtaining specialised permits.
“So because I don’t have money to buy a car, I want to have a taxi and what we are asking them is to subsidise us, help us, meet us half way because unemployment is a problem, we trying to feed our children also so government must intervene and help us. They did tell us about the pdp and license and over loads and we were being advised but now today they are telling us about the permits and we are still working on them.”
