Immigration protests in SA
South African (SA) Parliament’s Police Committee Chairperson, Ian Cameron, says the committee will conduct an oversight visit across Gauteng this week to assess police readiness ahead of June 30, when undocumented foreign nationals are expected to leave the country.
This follows Monday’s announcement by Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia that $36.4 million (R600 million) has been allocated to ensure operational readiness within the SA Police Service ahead of next week Tuesday.
SA will deploy additional police officers this week to deter possible violence.
Cameron says he hopes that anyone engaging in illegal conduct on the day will be held accountable and that sufficient resources will be available to deal with any potential incidents.
