PAP Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, has called for greater inclusion of women in the institution’s work

The Vice President of the Pan-African Parliament (PAP), Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, has called for greater inclusion of women in the institution’s work, stressing that their voices must be central to decision-making.

Her remarks come after the Parliament elected new leadership on Thursday, with Algeria’s Fateh Habib Boudaoud taking over as president. He secured 119 out of 134 votes and will serve a three-year term under the African Union’s regional rotation system.

The PAP has in the past faced criticism for sidelining women, particularly in leadership roles.

Agyeman-Rawlings said frameworks such as United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 clearly recognise the role of women in mediation and peacebuilding and should guide the institution’s approach.

She also warned that democratic progress across the continent remains fragile, pointing to recent setbacks in constitutional rule in several African countries.
