Parliament will have to look into the dual citizenship of Lesotho and South African (SA) citizens, as it’s among the issues that affect service delivery in towns along the border with Lesotho.
The Select Committee on Security and Justice heard that Lesotho nationals visit the country to access grants and health services.
Some cross the border illegally due to poor policing.
The Committee also heard that some security personnel at the border work with rogue elements.
The Committee has promised more frequent unannounced visits to the area.
Critical staff shortages in the police, the Border Management Authority and the SA National Defence Force are compromising the country’s borders.
Shrinking budgets are also hampering some of the activities and work done.
This came under the spotlight when Parliament’s Security and Justice Committee conducted a visit to the Maseru Border Post and some government buildings.
