A new research study examining the scale of disruptions to HIV programmes due to the funding cuts by the United States President Donald Trump’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), has shown a devasting blow to the global response to HIV.
The revelations are among the scientific highlights released ahead of the 26th International AIDS Conference which convenes in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil this week.
The official opening ceremony is scheduled for later tonight. The funding cuts by Trump’s PEPFAR could see years of progress in HIV programmes regress.
Critical PEPFAR-funded community HIV services provided by organisations serving as implementation partners are the hardest hit.
